August is when Gandia Playa reaches the peak of summer. The agenda mixes maritime tradition, cinema under the stars, art along the promenade, and two dates that don’t come around every year: the Festa a la Mar that opens the month, and the night of the 22nd, when the Muixeranga and the Castillo del Verano close out August in style.
The free Gandia a la Mar programme keeps running every day on the beach: sport, cinema, games for the little ones. And this year there’s something added: the sky has its own appointment too — though we cover that separately, since we’ve already dedicated a full guide to it.
The beach, the star of August
August on Gandia Playa is summer in its fullest form. Playa Norte keeps its Blue Flag with over three kilometres of fine sand and calm water, lifeguard service running from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, and beach showers throughout. The Neptú promenade remains the heart of beach life — on foot, by bike, or simply sitting still with a granizado and the sea in front of you.
What changes compared to July is the rhythm: there are more people, yes, but also more plans concentrated on a handful of nights worth marking on the calendar.
Festa a la Mar: how August begins (August 1st)
On August 1st, from 6:00 pm, the Passeig Rosa dels Vents hosts the most complete programme of the month:
- 6:00 pm — Opening of the exhibition Gandia Ciutat de Festivals, on the Passeig Marítim (C/ Illes Canàries)
- 8:00 pm — Fallas parade, setting off directly from the exhibition area and filling the promenade with music and festive spirit
- 10:00 pm — Night fireworks display (“mascletà”), by Pirotecnia del Mediterráneo, on the Passeig Rosa dels Vents
- 10:30 pm — Concert by Luis el Belga feat Walectric, live music in the open air
- Midnight — Musical entertainment with DJ Pascal Renolt, closing out the night
It’s how Gandia announces August: unhurried, but with everything. If you’re travelling with children, the fireworks and the parade are the most family-friendly part of the night; the concert and DJ set are more of a late-night plan for those who want to stretch the evening out.

August also brings cultural programming spread across the month, always along the Paseo Marítimo Neptuno:
- Face to Face (August 8th) — a performance event on the promenade.
- “Quimera” itinerant show, by the company La Fam (August 9th) — art by the sea in itinerant form, designed to surprise passers-by.
- Painters’ Meeting (August 23rd, 6:00 pm, C/ Castella-Lleó) — artists working outdoors facing the sea, a calm plan for an unhurried afternoon.

Sport at sea: the Travessia al Port (August 15th)
On August 15th, Playa Varadero hosts the LXXII Travessia al Port de Gandia and the XXIII Volta a l’Escullera, a popular open-water swimming event with more than seven decades of history. You don’t need to be a competitive swimmer to enjoy the atmosphere — it’s one of those long-standing fixtures on Gandia’s summer sporting calendar.

The big night of the month: August 22nd
If you can only pick one night in August to stay out late on the promenade, make it this one. On August 22nd, two of the summer’s most traditional events fall on the same evening:
8:00 pm — Muixeranga de La Safor parade (starting from C/ Alcoi, Paseo Marítimo Neptuno). The Muixeranga de la Safor is a group founded in Gandia in 2002 to revive an old tradition from the 19th-century construction guild. Its roughly 100 members, dressed in purple shirts, red sashes and white trousers, build human towers up to four or five levels high to the sound of the dolçaina and the tabal.
11:30 pm — Castillo del Verano (Escollera Norte, Port). Fireworks by Pirotecnia del Mediterráneo, the traditional finale that closes out summer at the harbour.
There’s plenty of time in between for dinner in the Grao before the fireworks — exactly the kind of evening worth planning ahead if you want a good spot on the waterfront.

Book ahead for the key nights: August 1st (Festa a la Mar) and August 22nd (Muixeranga + Castillo del Verano) are the busiest nights on the promenade and at nearby restaurants.
Eclipse glasses: if you’re staying to watch the sunset on August 12th, get certified glasses at the tourist offices before that date.
Sun protection: high factor for children, no exceptions, reapplied every two hours.
Cooler hours: before 10:00 am or after 6:00 pm for the beach; the rest of the day, in the shade or indoors.
Getting around: the Renfe Cercanías train connects Gandia Playa with Gandia city centre; in August, extra services run to meet demand.
