Do you know what it means for a beach to have a blue flag?
When you visit a beach and see this badge it means that you are calm, that you are on a beach committed to sustainability and the environment. And Gandía has been revalidating the blue flag since the first edition, and already has 37 consecutive blue flags. This year we hope to have number 38!
So when you come to Gandía, you are calm
Gandía will be the headquarters of the International Blue Flag Congress. It currently has Blue Flag certification on Playa Nord and Playa de l’Auir. Gandía is one of the few destinations in Spain to obtain this distinction from the beginning.
What guarantee does having the blue flag offer?
The criteria that beaches must meet are divided into four groups: environmental information and education, water quality -based on compliance with the European Bathing Water Quality Directive-, environmental management -especially with regard to the Law de Costas-, and security and services
On beaches, it is imperative to install panels with the distinction of the Blue Flag, providing detailed information about the beach, coastal ecosystems and, where applicable, details about nearby protected natural areas. In addition, a code of conduct must be included to respect these spaces.
Environmental Information and Education
The municipality has the responsibility of organizing at least five annual environmental educational activities.
Optionally and in collaboration, the Blue Flag promotes and coordinates initiatives such as Blue Paths and Blue Centers to complement these educational actions.
Water quality
The quality of water for bathing on the beach during the previous season must be optimal at all sampling points, in accordance with the criteria established by the Bathing Water Quality Directive. Periodic sampling will be officially carried out to evaluate and guarantee this quality.
Additionally, it is essential to comply with the requirements stipulated by the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.
Environmental management
The beach must comply with environmental regulations, especially the Coastal Law, guaranteeing cleanliness and efficient waste management, including selective collection. The presence of public bathrooms is required, with at least one adapted for people with disabilities on urban beaches or in at least one Blue Flag of the municipality.
Security and Services
Easy and safe access must be ensured on all beaches, with special attention to accessibility on urban beaches. In addition, it is necessary to have a first aid team and adequate human and material resources for care and relief.
